She walked along, prancing happily by her “master’s” side. She was anything but happy, but she had to act it for the sake of her form. Her emotions were in turmoil, unable to comprehend all that had just happened in the past few hours. Everyone she had ever known, or loved, or cared about, or hated, or annoyed was dead. Her family, her friends, her enemies, everyone. It was like being stabbed, which she had been several times. The human beside her seemed to know what path her thoughts had taken, for he was silent until they were almost out of the woods. “Those wolves, the ones my brother and his friends killed… Were they your family?” She stopped dead, her legs refusing to carry her farther. He kept walking for a few more paces before he realized she had stopped.
“What’s wrong? Are you alright?” Worry rang clearly in his voice, flashing in his eyes as he walked quickly back to her. Kneeling down he looked straight into her strange eyes. “They were, weren’t they?” Her canine head bobbed slightly, looking away from his burning green eyes. She felt him move closer, his arms around her shoulders and neck, pulling her closer. His voice whispering in her ear, trying to get through her numbed mind, “I’m sorry. Mine died too, but me and my brother were adopted by some really nice people. They’ll like you too, I know they will. Time will help it turn to a dream. A really awful dream, but something that you can forget ever happened. I know it sounds bad, but dwelling on it is worse. The pain never goes away if you do. What you said earlier about if I needed someone to talk to? The same goes for you. If you ever want to talk about something, just talk and I’ll listen.”
